Los Vatos Locos

Restaurant Menu

Project Description

The purpose of the project was to create a menu for a local restaurant. It was a class assignment where we were allowed to chose any cuisine we would like. The requirments were that we had to follow the principles of design, such as layout, alignment, typography, contrast, heirarchy and repetition. The restaurant name is “Los Vatos Locos” meaning “the crazy dudes. The target audience are people living in or around Vancouver between the ages of 25-35 who enjoy authentic Mexican Cuisine.

Project Description

The idea for a Mexican restaurant comes from my own travels to the country as well as growing up with a best friend who has a Mexican heritage. It is hard to find authentic Mexican cuisine locally that is similar to home cooking or actually being in Mexico. The design for the cover of the menu is also following the authentic theme with an image of a sugar skull. Sugar skulls are a part of one of Mexico’s largest holidays, Dia de Los Muertos. The name means “the crazy dudes,” the moustache and top hat were fitting for the cover image, to make the sugar skull a little more masculine. The chalkboard-style menu was chosen because I imagined that the restaurant would have them around the inside, maybe even parts of the walls. The images and the typography were chosen to fit with the chalkboard theme.
